Hiking Doilies

"The Earth laughs in flowers." -Ralph Waldo Emerson

Queen Anne's Lace is a wild carrot relative that grows in many of the places I hike. I have developed an appreciation for the beauty of these fractal flowers.

The 'queen' in Queen Ann's Lace is the little red flower in the middle. (If there is no queen, and the stem is hollow, don't pick it! It could be a similar looking but poisonous plant, Deadly Hemlock.) Some people use this plant as an ingredient in herbal skin products.

I enjoy watching throughout the cycle of the seasons, as the flowers open and develop...

They go from a pink tinged opening stage, to flat plates, to half domes, to prickly cups!

Their lace like appearance reminds me of doilies. I call 'em hiking doilies.

"Each flower is a soul opening out to nature."  -  Gerald De Nerval
