On the Color Orange

"Orange is red brought nearer to humanity by yellow." Wassily Kandinsky

Why are oranges orange? Because orange, the color, derives its name from orange, the fruit. The color has only had a name of its own for a few hundred years. It is the latest addition to the seven member rainbow of colors.

Nothing rhymes with it, nothing goes with it. So it is no wonder that it feels a bit insecure, compensating by being loud and flashy.

But orange is also optimistic, uninhibited, enthusiastic, and brash. It's so happy just being by itself that it cannot comprehend why the other colors avoid it.

Orange is a weird color. It just doesn't fit in. It shouts, and does not get along well with other colors. It is flamboyant, exciting, and stimulating. Orange is yummy! It is a color well used by a multitude of flowers and foods. But one tires quickly of its noise. When you want to make it even brighter, put orange with blue.

Orange is wishy washy, insubstantial, pyrrhic. It cannot decide if it is yellow or red. It cannot hold still; orange wants to move, and it passes quickly. We tend to see it as some kind of warm yellow if we can, or a really bright red. Orange doesn't really know who it is, and orange doesn't stay around long. Like flames, orange moves on.

Orange ya gonna ask me why I'm writing about a color? Yeah, I like orange. Sometimes.

(More on orange:)
