Carob

"Carob is said to contain more than three times as much calcium as milk. It contains protein as well as vitamins A, B, B2, B3 and D, and is low in fat. It is also high in calcium, phosphorus, potassium and magnesium and contains iron, manganese, and barium."- Lauren Felts: Nutritionist

I have sat under carob trees, munching on the delicious pods. It's a magical experience, sitting under a cookie tree! It is a nitrogen fixing species; this tree enriches the soil. Once mature, the carob tree can produce more than a ton of food a year. It can then produce food for up to two hundred years!

Carob is a very complete food. It is no wonder it was called St. John's bread. You can eat the pods raw like hard bread and for sure, you could pretty much live on them out in the wild. As such, we count carob as a superfood. That is the nourishing basis of this recipe.

This is a good bedtime drink for when you want just a little something before bed. Or you have just stayed up too late and need a quick snack, or just a satisfying shake for anytime, a replenishing drink-meal after exercise, or even a fast breakfast.

Omni's complete meal carob shake:

Start by throwing a handful of raw nuts in the blender, cover with water, and cream it smooth. Or you can use a few spoonfuls of nut butter, or raw coconut butter.

Next, add a half or whole banana.

Water, plus ice if you like.

A huge scoop of raw carob powder

Splash of vanilla, pinch of salt...

Sweetener, if desired. I use maple syrup or honey.

(I also put in two things that are not an essential part of the recipe, probiotics and EPA  algae oil.)

Blend until smooth, using the water to get the desired thickness for your carob superfood shake. Mmmmm you will sleep well!
