How to Save the World While Doing What You Really Want

Do you remember why you came into this life? I'll bet you wanted to make the world a better place, and also learn and grow as a being. And then things began to get all confusing!? Let us examine three different kinds do work to be done in this world at this time.

The first kind of work is chores. Everyone ought to do their share. You know, make your bed, keep your space clean, wipe your own butt. The basics. If everyone does a little, no one will have to do the drudge work all day. Seems fair to me.

The second kind of work is something that requires you to learn something new, get good at something, expand your boundaries, improve your skills. This is a good kind of activity to work at as a job.

Of course, one would want to choose to learn a new skill that is helpful, not harmful to others and the environment. In this way, you can benefit others and also grow as a person.

The third kind of work is to do what comes easy to you, what brings you joy. When you do it, you are in the zone, time melts away, this is what you feel you were born to do. This is your gift, and it is yours to do with as you please. It is your gift to world. It is who you are. You can do it as a job, or just for fun. You can charge money for it, or just give it away.

Can you find a happy balance of these three kinds of work?

"Take the initiative. Go to work, and above all co-operate...The things to do are: the things that need doing, that you see need to be done, and that no one else seems to see need to be done. Then you will conceive your own way of doing that which needs to be done — that no one else has told you to do or how to do it. This will bring out the real you...We must do away with the absolutely specious notion that everybody has to earn a living. It is a fact today that one in ten thousand of us can make a technological breakthrough capable of supporting all the rest. The youth of today are absolutely right in recognizing this nonsense of earning a living."

-"Buckminster Fuller
